Optimize SEO Meta Titles & Descriptions
Control how your products, collections, pages, and blogs appear in search engine results by editing the SEO metafields directly in Metafield Studio.
How SEO Metafields Work
Shopify reserves two system metafields that search engines use to display your pages in results:
| Metafield | Purpose | Where It Appears |
|---|---|---|
global.title_tag | SEO title (meta title) | The clickable blue link in search results |
global.description_tag | SEO description (meta description) | The snippet text below the link in search results |
By default, Shopify auto-generates these from your product title and description. Overriding them with custom values gives you full control over what shoppers see before they click.
Step 1: Find the SEO Metafields
- Open Metafield Studio and navigate to the resource you want to optimize (product, collection, page, or blog)
- Look for the
globalnamespace, this contains the SEO metafields - You'll see
title_taganddescription_tagkeys
Step 2: Write an Effective Meta Title
Edit the global.title_tag value. Follow these best practices:
- Keep it under 60 characters Longer titles get truncated in search results
- Lead with the primary keyword E.g., "Organic Cotton T-Shirt | Sustainable Basics" instead of "Our Amazing New Organic Cotton T-Shirt"
- Include your brand name Add it at the end, separated by a pipe or dash
- Make it unique per product Duplicate titles confuse search engines
Example:
Organic Cotton Crew Neck T-Shirt | YourBrand
Step 3: Write an Effective Meta Description
Edit the global.description_tag value:
- Keep it under 155 characters Longer descriptions get cut off
- Include a call to action "Shop now", "Free shipping", "Limited edition"
- Mention key selling points Price, material, availability, unique features
- Use natural language with keywords Avoid keyword stuffing
Example:
Soft organic cotton crew neck tee in 8 colors. Fair trade certified, pre-shrunk, and machine washable. Free shipping on orders over $50. Shop now.
Step 4: Optimize in Bulk
For stores with many products, use the Bulk Editor or CSV Import to update SEO metafields across hundreds of products at once:
- Export your products with the
global.title_tagandglobal.description_tagmetafields - Edit the CSV in a spreadsheet, write unique titles and descriptions for each product
- Import the updated CSV back into Metafield Studio
This is significantly faster than editing SEO fields one product at a time through Shopify admin.
Tips for Maximum Impact
- Target one primary keyword per page Don't try to rank for everything
- Use keyword variations naturally "running shoes", "running sneakers", "shoes for running" across different products
- Update seasonally Add "2026", "Summer Collection", or "Holiday Gift" to titles during relevant periods
- Check search results Google your product titles to see how they actually appear, then refine
Most Shopify merchants never customize their SEO metafields, relying on auto-generated titles. Simply writing unique meta titles and descriptions for your top 50 products can meaningfully improve your search visibility.
